What is a lubrication procedure?
Documented procedures for lubrication capture valuable information about how to maintain your machines. How you perform oil changes, regreasing, oil sampling or other lubrication activities can have a major impact on machine reliability. Quality procedures provide clear and detailed instructions to ensure that maintenance inspections and lubrication activities are performed correctly and consistently every time.
Why are lubrication procedures important?
If you do not have well-documented lubrication procedures, it’s likely that lubrication-related failures are occurring in your facility. With best-practice procedures in place, most failures can be predicted or even avoided entirely.
Often, procedure information is only stored in the memory of your most experienced team members. When they retire or move on to another job for any reason, you are likely to lose most or all of that valuable information if procedures have not been documented and checked ahead of time.
Documented procedures can also be extremely useful in onboarding new technicians quickly and efficiently. When new hires have clear instructions and expectations, they are more effective in carrying out critical tasks.
Product Selection with RelaWorks
Purchasing the right products from quality suppliers can be a major project of its own. To streamline and simplify this process, we will identify specifications for products like sight glasses, breathers and other lubrication-related hardware to offer simplified purchasing options through our RelaWorks e-commerce platform.
How does Noria develop lubrication procedures?
Noria procedure development focuses on four key elements. You can request a sample Noria procedure here to see what procedures inside our LubePM platform look like.
Work Scope. Procedures clearly scope the work an individual is expected to perform. Specific lubrication tasks should be detailed to exact specifications for lubrication excellence.
Consistency. Without clear procedures, each individual has the freedom to “personalize” the task at hand, leading to inconsistent and often poor results. Documented procedures bring uniformity into the lubrication task for more accurate trending of data and more reliable performance.
Best Practices. A procedure creates the framework for standardizing best practice. It serves as the container in which to pour the experience of employees, consultants, and vendors and others into a single document.
Training. One of the most important aspects of procedures is that they form the basis for training lubrication personnel. A good set of procedures serves as a natural curriculum for task-based training and evaluating an individual’s ability to carry out the assigned tasks.
By surveying all your lubricated assets as part of the Engineering Design phase of our Lubrication Program Development process, Noria experts will build detailed procedures that seek to eliminate the common root causes of machine failure and create consistent best practices.

Frequently asked questions
What’s wrong with my existing procedures?
It is common for lubrication procedures to be very minimal. They may simply say, “grease this bearing” without providing information about the type of grease needed, the right amount of grease or the correct method for adding the grease. If that information is not available and documented, it is likely to be applied inconsistently or forgotten completely over time. That’s why detailed procedures that cover all the key information a technician or inspector needs are so valuable.
